Greater Focus on ESG Practices from GCB

Golden Corrugated Box (M) Sdn Bhd (GCB) was formerly known as Corrugated Carton Packaging Enterprise (CCPE). Incorporated on 24th July, 1996, with humble beginnings in rented premises, the company commenced its business operations as a converter of corrugated boxes and carton boxes.

In the year 2004, owing to greater business demand, GCB shifted operations to a bigger factory with an area of 2.5 acres at Beranang Industrial Area.

During the mid-2008, from converting to a full 1.6M corrugation plant, 2017, saw GCB expanding its capacity to a new factory, based on 2.5 acres of land, together with a 1.8M Corrugated Machine to boost capacity.

As GCB became a larger player in the manufacturing of corrugated boxes and carton boxes, it realized the importance of focusing on ESG practices.

Let us look around a bit for what ESG is.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. It is a framework for understanding and measuring how sustainably an organization operates. ESG takes the holistic view that sustainability extends beyond just environmental issues.

In simpler terms, it is how an organization manages risk and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance.

How Does it Affect the Operations of GCB?

GCB has adopted a framework that helps stakeholders understand how it manages environmental impact, risk and management practices, including direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, responsibility over natural resources, and overall resiliency over physical climate risks like climate change, floods, and fires.

For the governance factor, GCB’s leadership incentives are aligned to stakeholder expectations, how their rights are viewed, and the internal controls set in place to get more transparency and accountability.

Owing to the nature of the business that GCB is in, where natural resources are the raw materials for the manufacture of corrugated boxes and carton boxes, GCB is committed to protecting the environment by:

  • Making a Better Use of the Earth’s Resources
  • Reducing Harm to the Environment
  • The manufacture of corrugated boxes and carton boxes is done after processing natural wood that comes from nature.

While the dependency would be on nature for the raw product, it is also equally important to make sure that the by-products (waste eliminations) do not contaminate the environment.

GCB takes care of that by believing in more and more recycling so that the dependency on the natural raw materials is curtailed to a large extent, along with ensuring that the by-products (waste eliminations) are treated well before being let back into the environment.

By Complying with Legal and Other Applicable Requirements

On the social pillar, GCB has a deep, committed relationship with its stakeholders. These include Human Capital Management metrics, which include fair wages and employee engagement metrics.

It also covers the impact on the communities connected to its operations and the supply chain partners. Equally important is the fact that every aspect of the management has to be transparent with the stakeholders, with their buy-ins.

Prevent Pollution by Stressing On Environment Protection Education and Promoting Environment Protection Awareness

Environment awareness is very important, and hence it would always be beneficial to instill it right from the younger age which GCB believes in doing, taking efforts to promote environmental protection.

The above points can be judged by the policy of the company, and that is exactly what GCB has to say on our policy related to the environment.
